Monica Aissa Martinez reflects on the history of egg tempera and casein in her work, looking back to Egyptian art, the Renaissance, and Surrealist painters from the early twentieth century. For these two paintings, Martinez applied red and white tempera as part of the top layers of the design. The matte surface of the tempera contrasts the places where she applied micaceous iron oxide, which has a glistening, silvery appearance. 2/19
