Mother's Milk
Using strong colors, varied texture, and elaborately built-up surfaces upon which to paint, Loie Hollowell creates a visual language somewhere between abstraction and figuration. Appearing at first glance to be strictly abstract, closer inspection of the painting reveals that the form on the left is a distinguishable breast emitting a vibrant orange color. Often incorporating her body engaged in an intimate or sexual act in her work, Mother’s Milk differs by exploring the artist’s experience of pregnancy. Hollowell created a series of works around themes of motherhood and reproduction, seeing her body as a space of creation and sustenance.
Mother’s Milk explores motherhood through bold colors, sensuous shapes, and raised textures, evoking the body’s curves and nurturing energy. Central egg-shaped forms, layered in glowing hues, suggest breasts, milk flow, and life-giving vitality. Hollowell’s organic symmetry and radiant gradients create an intimate space, reflecting themes of fertility, nourishment, and the profound bond between mother and child. This work celebrates the beauty and power of maternal experiences, inviting reflection on how bodies sustain and connect. May 2025
