Blackwell's Island
En La isla Blackwell, Edward Hopper exploró la intersección entre la naturaleza y el entorno urbano en este lugar del río Este (East River) de Nueva York. La pintura presenta una amplia extensión de cielo arriba y turbulentas aguas de color azul cobalto abajo, divididas por la silueta de sombreados edificios sobre el horizonte. En el pasado, la isla Blackwell (hoy llamada isla Roosevelt o Roosevelt Island) había sido sede de una prisión, un manicomio y un hospital, entre otras instalaciones. La variada arquitectura y el carácter recluido de la isla atrajeron a Hopper.
