Monument to the Constitution of the United States
Below, Los Angeles-based artist Sandow Birk explains his work Monument to the Constitution of the United States.
“Inspired by a residency at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, I reexamine our understanding of the founding text of our nation. Rather than think of the Constitution as sacred and historical, I imagine it as a living document that affects our everyday lives. I propose a fantastical monument which is inhabited by average Americans going about their daily lives, yet I also provide the complete text and amendments of the much-cited document, and embellish the Bill of Rights with images depicting their effects on our routine activities, uniting law with the mundane.” – Sandow Birk
