By using simple, direct forms, Ted Jones depicts the dramatic moment of Saul’s conversion on the road to Damascus. In the biblical New Testament story, Saul had been a persecutor of Christians, but was struck by a blinding light from heaven accompanied by the voice of Christ, which led to his swift change of heart.

Jones’s faith often plays into his selection of subject matter––for the artist, “art is a spiritual experience.” Using his work as a platform for explorations of faith, Jones added another reference to salvation into this scene, incorporating nails into the hands and feet of Saul as a reference to Christ’s crucifixion.
